Globe Glider: how it works

Background requests and server push

The Globe Glider website uses background requests (a.k.a. AJAX technology) to provide a fast and responsive user interface.

The information flows in both directions.
When it starts with the user, we call it ‘pulling’. The user clicks on a map, to give an example. This triggers a request to the server, which furnishes the data (in the form of a map move or text response) back to the user.

Pushing works the other way. The server detects a change in its information, and ‘pushes’ the new situation/data to user(s). Thanks to this, there is real-time synchronization between multiple clients, for example between your browser and Google Earth.

The Google Earth connection

Globe Glider provides real-time synchronization between your browser and Google Earth. The browser view employs the server push technology to immediately respond to alterations in the Google Earth view.

Globe Glider also provides the same, instantaneous reaction in the other direction! An action taken in the browser causes the Google Earth view to change immediately and correspondingly. Globe Glider’s server exerts real time control over Google Earth.

Previous implementations of this feature had to rely on Google Earth's COM API. They thus had to restrict themselves to the Windows operating system. They also required security configuration changes. Globe Glider, on the other hand, achieves similar capabilities over standard HTTP requests through an adapted server push mechanism.

Google Earth control is not limited to changing the view location. All KML objects can be made to appear or disappear under server control.
